RE: Maxxis (D) vs. Carlisle (E) vs. Marathon (C)

My 5er came with Marathons. After two blowouts, switched to Maxxis and Pressure Pro Air Pressure sensors. "knock on wood", no problems since.

RE: Forest River

I have to agree with the statement about the Concertone stereo system. I've had our replaced once & should be replaced again. It is a real piece of junk! Other than the stereo, we really love our 5th wheel. It's a 2005 Grand Surveyor, 240BH.

RE: Look out for the Tree Branches

I agree! Just got back from a trip to South Carolina. When we pulled in to our campsite, I noticed a dark scrape just about our awning. Got out & checked it closely. Looked like a branch hit just about the front of the awning and scraped down the side about 36 inches. Scratches the paint and left nasty green sap on the side. Didn't break anything however. I didn't feel anything, hear anything, etc. when it happened. Only thing I can assume is that on the entrance road to the park, which is fairly narrow with overhanging limbs, we must have scraped a limb when we met another vehicle & had to get over to the far right. Stuff happens sooner or later.

RE: what do you tow with this Ford?

My TV is a 2004 F250 Super Duty with a 5.4/3.73 combo. I pull a 2005 Grand Surveyor 240BH 5th wheel. My mileage when towing is 9 - 10 mpg. This combo works but as mentioned, when traveling in the mountains, it would be nice to have more power.

RE: Towing a 5th with a Ram 2500 Hemi?

Just as a point of reference, I've been pulling a 2005 Grand Surveyor 5th wheel with a 2004 Ford F-250 SD for a couple of years. My TV has the 5.4L gas with 3.73 rear gears. I've been happy with the setup but I have had it kick down into 1st gear a few times when in the Blue Ridge mountains. Don't like that screamin' high RPMs sound! If/when I get a new TV, will probably consider diesel.

RE: lite 5h wheel

Might want to check out the Grand Surveyor 240 BH. We have a 2005 and love it. Easy to tow. Plenty of room for us, 2 people & 1 small dog. I think total length is around 25 1/2 feet.

RE: VA Campgrounds, New

I live about 20 miles from Reedville, Va. There's a KOA there that also offers a day cruise out to Smith Island in the Chesapeake Bay. We haven't camped there but here's their contact info: 382 Campground Rd., Reedville, VA. 804-453-3430

RE: LCD Doran Pressure Pro RV

I just purchased and installed the RV360 Doran system two weeks ago. I used it on a relatively short, 300 mile trip. I'm very happy with the system.

RE: Tire covers question....

I highly recommend the tire covers. Northern Tool has them for $19.95 a pair. Todd Thanks for all replies. I think I'm going to get the covers. I'm also planning to keep 303 Aerospace on the tires as wheel. Todd, thanks for the lead on the Northern Tool price.

Tire covers question....

Just wondering how many people use the vinyl tire covers on their rigs? I just put on a new set of tires and am considering buying the tandem tire covers from CW. Are they worth using? Thanks.

RE: Landing Gear Stuck, help!

I had the same problem on one of my first outings with my new 5er. Checked all fuses, etc. and it turned out to be a bad connection in the battery compartment. Tightened it and all was well again. Good luck.

Installed Doran TPMS yesterday...

and I must say it's a very straight forward install & worked as advertised. So far, I haven't decided whether to hard-wire or just use the cigarette lighter power. Right now I only have the sensors on my 5er. I might opt to get additional sensors for my TV a little later. Do most use or not use the sensor locks? It's a good idea to prevent losing or theft but seems like a pain in the *** to remove when you need to air up the tires.

RE: Need inputs on leveling 5er when attached to TV...

First of all, to the moderator, sorry about the double post to the towing forum. To clarify: the tires that blew are the rear tires on my 5th wheel, not my TV. I don't have access to scales to weigh my rig. I have a Grand Surveyor SVF 240BH. Dry weight 5900 lbs. Load capacity: 1808 Hitch weight: 1193. We never run with anything in the tanks. Just load bare necessities. Two bicycles are carried in the truck bed. Nothing is attached to the rear. Don't have a rear bumper. Spare tire mounts underneath the rig in the front. Thanks for all inputs.

Need inputs on leveling 5er when attached to TV...

Note: I also posted this thread in Fifth Wheels forum but just wanted to see if I get additional comments here. OK, after blowing a rear tire on both sides, I'm thinking maybe the 5er is putting too much weight on the back axle. When hooked to your TV, should the 5th wheel be completely level? I talked to the dealer where I purchased my rig. They also installed my hitch & leveled the unit. The service manager told me that they can't get a 5th wheel completely level when hooked up and that it's better to have a little rise in the front of the 5er so that TV handling isn't adversely affected. Is this information correct or do I throw the BS flag? Thanks for any inputs.

RE: Need inputs on leveling 5er when attached to TV...

What they said is basically right. It would be better to have it level with about 8+ inches of clearance from the truck rails to the bottom of the overhang, but if you have a low trailer and a high TV like a 4WD it will be slightly high in the front often. You don't want too much difference, if you do it is best to get the springs flipped on the trailer. This puts them on top of the trailer axle and gives you about a 4" lift on the trailer to level your rig out. Mike Mike, My TV is a 4WD so it sits high. My 5er is a lightweight Grand Surveyor. It doesn't have conventional springs. It has Independent Torsion suspension system. Wayne

RE: Need inputs on leveling 5er when attached to TV...

You want to be as level as possible.you could be a inch off and probably not going to matter much. How far off are you? I'm probably no more than an inch or two. On level ground, the front level bubble is about a 1/3 way into the leveled center lines.

RE: First trip of the season, another blown Marathon tire!

When a tire shreds that bad, chances are it didn't blow...it was towed fast at little or no air for quite aways. Trailers are wider than the TV, very possible to pick up debris that the TV doesn't. Driver's, if your mirrors aren't adjusted where you can see those tires and you aren't looking at them constantly while driving then how are you going to know if you have a problem? Don't ever let someone have to flag you down for what you should be able to see in your mirrors. That's driver error, not 'made in China'. Hey, I mean absolutely no disrespect. The best tire, made in America can still pick up a nail and go flat. Pull it down the freeway at high speed for 117 miles and it'll shred just like that 'cheap Chinese tire'. (Oh boy, guess I'm gonna hear it on this one) Still learnin'.... -Jeff Well, Jeff, Please re-read my OP. Since I had a Marathon failure on the last trip of last season, I was VERY aware of the possibility of a tire failure. Last years occurence happened on the interstate and was a complete tread loss that caused damage. When it blew, I pulled off the interstate as soon as possible. This current tire loss was NOT a complete tread loss. As I stated, tire pressure was set before I left home to max recommended of 50psi. I did not exceed 60mph and most of trip was on secondary roads at 55 mph or less. I had just turned on the last secondary road leading to the campground entrance when the tire blew. You must spend a lot of time looking at your tires in your side mirrors. I try to concentrate my time looking at the highway. Not meaning to get into this whole debate, But was your tires the "C" rated tire? it must have been if the inflation was 50psi. In my opinion, trailers should all have the "D" rated at leased, or higher. And do you check the temp of your tires when stoping for potty breaks? I do, and have a laser temp sensor gun and my tires run @ 101*. Truck and trailer are the same temp. I see all these problems with tires and ask my self are these tires being turned, or scuffed to the sides when being maneuvered, putting the side walls and belts in a saver bind? I see alot of people do this when parking, and leaving the tires in this bind, and they sit there for a couple days. The tire should be relieved, or straightened so it sits as if it were going down the Hiway. And as for the valve stems GET metal ones. The tire people tell you that the stems are heavy duty rubber, don't buy it. Get the metal ones. My tires are C rated load. I would like to put larger wheels & tires but don't have the space. It's only 2 inches between the tires now. I'm installing 4 new Maxxis tires tomorrow & metal stems.

Interesting editorial on Denman tires...

In my quest for new trailer tires, I ran across this editorial about the Denman ST tires: http://www.cycletrailerrental.com/editorial0027.html
